INDIA & TERRORISM

Terrorism actually refers to those violent acts which are intended to threaten or terrorize the minds of people. The terrorist activities are done to achieve some ideological, political or religious goals. US law defines terrorism as any premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents.
The weapon of terrorism is as old as human society & various laws have been enacted from time to time to combat with it. Terrorism is very different from other crimes. It particularly retards the development, progress & peace of a nation & mankind as a whole. Despite of universal condemnation of terrorism by all governments & nations, most of them seem to be not free from it except of those who have taken stern measure against it. In short, it has become a part of the political process for the achievement & promotion of certain goals & interests.
India has been combating with insurgency & terrorist attacks from Naxals, Ulfa & Maoists & Pak-based & supported terrorist outfits like Lashkare Taiba (LeT), Jaish Muhammad & HUJI which are linked with AL-Qaida since 1960’s. But because of its lenient attitude towards it India has not yet been able to overcome it.
Our image on the world front gets hampered if we dont take stern measures against the terrorists involved in attacks on Mumbai and Parliament. When cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Jaipur are targeted, the target is also India's economic rise. When our economy is hurt, our people are hurt. Our democracy is hurt. The forces of terrorism, inspired by ideologies of hatred, intolerance and exclusion pose today a fundamental challenge to liberal democracies, pursuit of secular ideals, pluralism and all that we associate with freedom, the rule of law and human rights. They pose a challenge to democracy at home, to democracy in our region, to democracy around the world. These terrorists seek to pit one community against another. There is a systematic effort to spread communal disharmony and conflict. There is an integral link between our defence of human rights, our defence of the rule of law and our fight against the forces of terrorism, extremism and intolerance.
Today, we Indians will have to stand united against terrorism irrespective of our caste, colour, creed or religion. We will have to remember that terrorism has no religion. It’s high time now, if we don’t take stern measures against terrorism today may be it will be too late tomorrow.
